An ‘enchanting’ light installation is coming to First Street this December with the arrival of a group of life-sized Polar Bears.

The installation, named ‘Celebration’ has been created by local artist Lazerian and will be installed at Tony Wilson Place on 29th November. The naming of the installation derives from the definition, ‘a group of polar bears, brought together as a community by good food.’

The First Street team commissioned Denton based artist, Liam Hopkins aka Lazerian, in October to create the 5m long sculptures.

The largest polar bear will be 5m long, almost 2m wide and 2.5m tall with smaller sculptures surrounding. LED’s will be attached to each structure. The custom-build sculptures will allow visitors to take in the ‘magical’ atmosphere of First Street thus creating a ‘Winter Wonderland’ in the heart of the city centre.

The inspiration for the piece comes from the animal’s characteristics. Polar Bears only tolerate others in proximity if there is a good food source nearby.

First Street is also working to deliver net zero commercial space, which polar bears and the melting of the ice caps have also become synonymous with.

First Street’s reputation for sustainability and its quality bar, restaurant and leisure offering has driven the ethos of the installation and is an indication of the vision for the wider estate.

The installation will combine lighting, visuals, and wildlife, transforming First Street throughout December and bring a new and cultural approach to Christmas installations.

Jamie Hills at ASK Real Estate, landowners at First Street said, “’Celebration’ will bring something different to First Street this Christmas with a stunning light installation which is set to surprise and delight our guests at every turn whilst highlighting our sustainability pledge. We are also excited to be showcasing local artistic talent with an installation that only features recycled materials.

Formed in Summer 2018, First Street’s proactive sustainability committee launched and has since established itself as a driver for positive change playing a part in the wider vision for Manchester to become a carbon neutral, climate-resilient city region and we are delighted that our Christmas activation aligns with this.”

Liam Hopkins at Lazerian added, “It’s been great to collaborate with First Street on this installation. ‘Celebration’ was born out of the idea to celebrate culture, sustainability, and the social side of First. Street. Having recently delivered a signature piece for #COP26, it’s been encouraging to work alongside such a prominent Manchester neighbourhood with sustainability at its core.”

‘Celebration’ will launch on W/C 29 th November in Tony Wilson Place and be in place for the month of December. First Street’s F&B offerings will all be open throughout the Christmas period. For more information, please visit First Street website.
