A special record of a month in the life of Manchester is to be created at Manchester Central Library this Saturday, through a creative ‘hackathon’.

During the month of April, residents have been sharing photos, videos, stories and sounds which reflect their day-to-day life in Manchester, using #ourmcrhack on social media.

At the all-day Creative Hackathon, on Saturday 28 April, volunteer participants will be coming up with innovative ways to interpret the collection of contributions, using everything from printed collages to short films to create a fascinating record of April 2018 in Manchester, which will be presented at www.archivesplus.org.

Stories for use in the project can be contributed by the end of Thursday.  Content can sent using Twitter, SoundCloud, or YouTube and can be about anything from the daily commute, your workplace, homelife, pets, hobbies, a big night out with friends, or day out with the family.   Don’t forget to use #ourmcrhack and to give a location, so the content can be ‘pinned’ on an interactive map of Manchester.  Stories can also be emailed to creativehackathon@gmail.com.

Strategic Lead for Libraries, Galleries and Culture, Neil MacInnes, said: “Using stories, images and videos contributed by Manchester residents, we’re going to create a unique ‘snapshot’ of life in the city.  We need your flair and passion for Manchester to make it as rich and engaging as we possibly can, so come along to the free ‘Hackathon’ on Saturday and get creative.”

The Hackathon has been supported by the Carnegie UK Trust.  Anna Grant, Senior Policy and Development Officer at the Trust, said:  “We are delighted to be supporting Manchester City Council to deliver their Creative Hackathon and engage with the people of Manchester in an innovative way.  The hackathon itself will be a really interesting opportunity to work together with lots of different people from across the city and use new data to work on an exciting Manchester-themed challenge.”
