Police have arrested a man following an attempted rape in Ashton-on-Mersey earlier this morning

A woman in her 50s was walking across a car park off Firs Road, when she was attacked by a man who had been riding a silver pedal bike.

The man sexually assaulted her and attempted to rape her before fleeing on the bike in the direction of Harboro Road.

Police were called and quickly arrested a man aged 32 nearby on suspicion of attempted rape.

He remains in custody for questioning.

Detective Sergeant Phil Bainbridge of GMP’s Trafford Division said: “This was a shocking attack that has left the woman involved understandably shaken.

“Thankfully, she received no serious injuries and is recovering well in the care of specialist officers.

“We understand the concern that incidents like this cause and there will be a visible police presence in the area while officers continue their investigations.

“I would encourage members of the public to approach these officers with any questions they may have.

“Police were quickly on the scene and  have arrested one man, but we continue to appeal for information from members of the public on this crime.

“Were you in the area at the time of the offence or saw anyone acting suspiciously? Perhaps you saw a silver push bike being ridden in the vicinity at the time?

“If you have any information, get in touch immediately.”
