Watch science (un)-fold as experts demonstrate a real animal mummy wrapping to a live audience.
Dr. Campbell Price, Dr. Lidija M. McKnight and Dr. Stephanie Atherton-Woolham from Manchester Museum will come to the Museum of Wigan Life on Thursday 22nd June to give an exciting talk about how mummies were wrapped in Ancient Egypt.
Using a soft toy resembling the size of an ibis bird, the scientists will attempt to replicate the herringbone wrappings of the sacred ibis mummies from animal catacombs of Saqqara, providing a rare opportunity for visitors to witness live science and the result of extensive laboratory research.
Councillor Jim Moodie, lead member for leisure at Wigan Council spoke of his appreciation for the event by saying: “We were very excited to be the fourth location that this touring exhibition has visited and want to bring added extras and experiences to our visitors while we have the display.
“The wrapping event promises to be an interesting and quirky one, combining a sociable evening with an insight into a traditional practice from Ancient Egypt.
“We’re extremely lucky to have colleagues from Manchester demonstrate the wrapping and urge people to come down and hear the fascinating story behind it.”
The event follows the launch of the Museum of Wigan Life’s most recent exhibition, Animal Mummies Uncovered, which is on loan from Manchester museum until 13th January 2018.
The free exhibition features original cat, crocodile, bird and snake mummies and applies cutting edge technology such as ultrasounds and 3D printing to help visualise the contents inside.
Tickets to the wrapping event are £5 each and include a complimentary glass of wine or beer.
Doors open from 6:30pm until 9:30pm.
