Christmas has arrived at Levenshulme Market! The community-run social enterprise is launching a month of Christmas markets, full of handmade gifts, festive treats, street food, mulled drinks and fantastic entertainment for all ages.
Levenshulme’s Christmas Markets will run for three weekends in December, with markets on Saturday 7th and Saturday 14th at Levenshulme station car park . The celebrations finish with a bang at the Christmas Party Night Market on Friday 20th December, 5-9pm, perfect for an after-work celebration.
Shop Local for Gifts and Decorations
Our focus this year is to encourage people to shop local this Christmas, with up to 50 stalls at each of our December markets selling handmade, unique Christmas presents, as well as Manchester’s best street food, cakes and confectionary. We’ll have knitwear, handmade decorations, Christmas wreaths, ceramics, candles, soaps, artwork, cards and much more – all of it handmade in Manchester and the surrounding area.
Food and Drink
On the food and drink side of things: we’ll have mulled wine, wassail cider, smoking bishop and other winter warmers flowing from the Levy Market Bar while Kaffe and Kaka will be serving up authentic Scandinavian lattes and mince pie flavour cinnamon buns. As always, there’s plenty of delicious street food to tuck into, from the likes of Geordie Seoul, The Otto-men, Cibus and many more. We’ll also have Christmas cheeseboards available from Winter Tarn Dairy, cranberry sauce and a range of chutneys from Devil Dog Sauces, and mince pies and traditional cakes from The Buttery.
3 Minute Portraits
During all of our December markets we’ll be offering 3 minute portraits by a collection of Manchester artists – from Nell Smith to Emma Reynolds, they’ll create a sketch of yourself or your pet – the perfect bespoke present for Christmas!
Entertainment
We also have plenty of family-friendly entertainment planned.
- Saturday 7th December:
Science Buskers – We’ll have the Science Buskers (aka the University of Manchester Physics Outreach team) with some breathtaking physics experiments, from the biggest stuff in the universe right down to the smallest things we can look at, all right in front of you.
Tom Black – Described by BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris as ‘wonderful, heartfelt music’, Tom’s songs take in Americana, blues, country, gospel and all that lies between which he’ll mix up with some Christmas favourites.
- Saturday 14th December
University of Manchester Music Society – Singers from the university’s music society will be performing carols.
Madeley school of Dance – Pupils from the Madeley School of Dance will perform their ever-popular annual Christmas dance.
- Friday 20th December
SHE Choir Manchester – The much loved collaborative women’s choir will be stopping by to perform a selection of carols.
John Hincock – A multi-instrumental performer known across Manchester for his performances on the kora, a 21 string handmade African harp which he’ll be using to give a unique twist to some well-known festive tunes.
Market Manager Richard Hirst says of this year’s Christmas celebrations in Levenshulme:
“This Christmas our traders have really outdone themselves – the quality of the gifts, the cards, the food and everything else for sale at Levenshulme Market this Christmas has been incredible – and their energy and enthusiasm is set to make each of our December markets an event in its own right. And by shopping local this Christmas, we’re excited for our customers to discover a world of wonderful products right on their doorstep while supporting their local economy.”
