Sawadee Ka foodies! The Great Northern has revealed who will be taking over its Community Kitchen on the Square this week, and it’s certain to have you beaming from ear to ear.

This week, expect mouth-watering, tastebud tickling treats, bursting with flavour and guaranteeing grins all round as Manchester’s award-winning, critically acclaimed Thai restaurant, Siam Smiles, takes over the Community Kitchen to serve up the most delicious dishes on its menu.

Siam Smiles is usually based at the Great Northern’s Mews and this is the first time that May, the restaurant’s owner and chef, has cooked at a pop-up. May learned to cook Thai food via YouTube videos and her restaurant is one of Manchester’s best-loved small restaurants, receiving rave reviews from both Mancunians and culinary experts. The Daily Telegraph’s food writer even said that the restaurant is ‘the most exciting thing to happen to me in Manchester since the days of the Hacienda’.

From soups to salads, noodles to rice, there’s a range of Thai classics for everyone on the restaurant’s exclusive Community Kitchen menu. Tuck into PhpPla Phed – duck summer rolls, enjoy Yam Talay Woosen – seafood salad, yummy Khang Massaman Gal – chicken curry with rice, or delicious all-time favourite, Pad Thai.

For dessert treat yourself to Koaw Niew Mamaung – sweet sticky rice, or Kuay Thod – banana flitter, both served with coconut ice cream.

Ranging from just £5 – £12, all dishes are the perfect size to share with friends or family, or to enjoy yourself.

But it doesn’t stop with the food; enjoy a G&T with a twist from Didsbury Gin or Estrella Damm the pop-up’s official drinks sponsors. With a range of gin flavours to choose from including raspberry and elderflower, strawberry and lemon or blood orange, they are the perfect weekend tipple.

The Siam Smilesdining experience will be open from 16:00 – 20:30 on Thursday, and 11:30 – 21:00 Friday to Sunday. No need to book, simply pop down and enjoy drinks and food outdoors either solo or with the rest of your household and soak up the last drop of September sunshine.

The pop-up restaurant on the square provides a COVID-secure space for local businesses that are restricted with limited outdoor dining space. The weekly takeovers allow these restaurants to serve up their delicious cuisine right in the heart of Manchester and also offer a simple (and of course tasty!) way for the city’s residents to support independent eateries.

All diners will experience table service to reduce close contact and ensure social distancing to kept at all times.
