1623 Theatre Company is delighted to bring their new show Queer Lady M to Waterside, Sale on Saturday 29 February as part of their 2020 National Tour.

1623 is a theatre company based in Derby that create work to expand horizons and give voices to marginalised people in response to Shakespeare and the world today.

Their newest show, Queer Lady M combines drag, Shakespeare and devised performance and explores the real-life experiences of working-class, gender-fluid artist Shane Gabriel (Funny Girls). Queer Lady M has been created in conjunction with Derbyshire LGBT+, Lucy J Skilbeck, Director of leading queer theatre company Milk Presents, and Attitude Magazine and explores identity, anxiety and isolation and finding strength from within.

Queer Lady M follows Shane who is lonely, lost and has been stood up. Shane idolises Lady Macbeth and always has done since she slipped into his world through his Grandma’s telly when he was small, he turns to Shakespeare’s fierce queen for strength – but how far can becoming your idol help you find yourself when you’re anxious and alone?

Expect outrageous lip-syncing, cheeky dancing, and sassy conversation as Queer Lady M invites you to enter a world of passion and shade. But what happens when the show is over when Shane removes the makeup and puts Lady M to bed? What stories will come to light as Shane invites us into a twilight world?

The fabulous fusion of devised performance, drag and Shakespeare will leave audiences entertained, engaged and inspired as they explore the unique relationship between a fierce drag queen and her anxious alter-ego who join forces to fight tragedy. Queer Lady M celebrates queerness and the themes of the show are particularly relevant to the LGBT+ community.

“Collapsing binary distinctions between female and male, role and character, then and now, there and here. A celebration of fluidity in its many forms.”

(Ben Spiller, Queer Lady M Director)
