The Garden Bar in Chorlton has announced that legendary award-winning Manchester broadcaster, writer and lifelong music obsessive Terry Christian will be the next special guest DJ to take over the decks at the popular neighbourhood venue.

Taking place later this month, the event will see Terry curate a night of inspired tunes at the venue, continuing The Garden Bar’s series of guest DJ nights celebrating the city’s rich musical heritage.

A huge music fan with encyclopaedic knowledge spanning punk, indie, soul, reggae and Manchester’s influential club culture, Terry remains closely connected to the city’s live music scene and regularly DJs, hosts events and appears at music festivals and cultural discussions across the UK.

Born and raised in nearby Old Trafford, Terry Christian remains one of Manchester’s most recognisable media personalities and one of the city’s best-known champions of music and youth culture. Long before becoming a household name on television, Terry began his broadcasting career presenting music shows on BBC Radio Derby before going on to secure regular slots on Piccadilly Radio and BBC Radio Manchester, building a reputation for his passion for new music, sharp wit and unmistakable broadcasting style.

Best known as the presenter of Channel 4’s groundbreaking late-night music and youth culture show The Word, Terry became one of the defining faces of British television during the 1990s, interviewing some of the biggest bands and artists of the era while helping bring alternative music culture into the mainstream. Across his career he has continued to champion emerging artists, Manchester bands and grassroots music scenes, establishing himself as an award-winning broadcaster, journalist, author and commentator, including winning two Sony Awards.

Alongside his broadcasting work, Terry has written several books including the first book on Oasis called ‘Brothers’ and has recently been touring two successful live shows: one revisiting his experiences fronting The Word during the height of Britpop and alternative culture, and another, Confessions of an Irish Catholic, exploring his upbringing, family life and Manchester roots with his trademark humour and storytelling.

Terry Christian said: “Music has always been a massive part of my life, from growing up around Manchester’s music scene to presenting radio shows and spending years interviewing bands and artists I loved. I grew up not far from Chorlton, so it’s always great coming back to places with a proper community atmosphere and a genuine love of music. I’m looking forward to playing a mix of favourites, forgotten gems and a few surprises.”

Jess Anderson, Manager of The Garden Bar added: “Terry is a genuine Manchester icon and someone who has always lived and breathed music. From radio and television to championing new artists and DJing, he’s played a huge part in the city’s cultural story, so having him here feels incredibly fitting. We know it’s going to be a brilliant night.”

The event is free to attend and forms part of a growing monthly series of guest DJ nights bringing together a mix of well-known faces and newcomers, alongside the venue’s much-loved resident DJ, Martin Holland.

The Garden Bar’s new programme of guest DJs, curated music, comedy and community-led nights, follows its relaunch as a family-run neighbourhood bar and restaurant. With a refreshed look and a new events calendar, featuring comedy, music, quizzes and themed-food evenings, The Garden Bar is fast becoming one of Chorlton’s most welcoming social hubs.
