Angela Rayner has urged Sir Keir Starmer to ban social media for children aged under 16.

The Greater Manchester MP said Sir Keir should “just make a decision and do it” because it seemed “so clear that that’s what you need to do”

A Government consultation is to take place on Tuesday, to considered whether to introduce an Australian-style ban.

The House of Lords voted 316 to 165, majority 151, in favour of Conservative former minister Lord Nash’s amendment to the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill.

However the Government appears divided over the issue and a number of studies into the Australian ban suggest that at least 60 per cent of Australian under-16s are not complying with the ban – in many instances, finding methods of circumnavigating it.
