Manchester is expressing its solidarity and sorrow for Barcelona after the terrorist attack in Las Ramblas which has claimed at least fourteen lives.
The city’s thoughts are also with those injured in a separate attack in Cambrils, Catalonia, hours later.
A book of condolence has been opened in Manchester Town Hall – and an online book of condolence at www.manchester.gov.uk – and the Town Hall’s flags will be flown at half mast. At night the building will be lit up in red and yellow, the colours of both the Spanish and Catalonian flags.
Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor Eddy Newman has written to the Mayor of Barcelona expressing the city’s sympathy and support.
Councillor Sue Murphy, deputy leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Our hearts go out to Barcelona in the wake of this sickening incident and Manchester stands in solidarity with that great city. We know from recent experience both how devastating this sort of attack is but also how important international solidarity, community spirit and a refusal to give in to terror are in dealing with its aftermath.”
