A women has died and a man is in a serious condition in hospital this morning after two cars collided on the Hyde Road in Ardwick yesterday evening.

The accident happened around 8.00pm when a black VW Golf was travelling towards Hyde when it collided with a grey Nissan Micra travelling in the opposite direction.

The passenger of the Micra, a woman in her 70s, sadly died at the scene while the driver,also aman in his 70s,is in a life-threatening condition in hospital.

The driver of the Golf,who is in his 30s,suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Golf was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, drink-driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody for questioning.

The road was closed for several hours while forensic and reconstruction work took place.

Sergeant Lee Westhead from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “My thoughts are with the family at this terrible time.

“We will continue to offer them support as we try to establish exactly what happened last night.

“I would appeal to anyone who saw this collision take place, to please contact us as a matter of urgency.

“I would also ask that anyone who was driving along that stretch of road, who has a dash cam, to please check their footage. There might be something on there that could be vital to this investigation.”
