Andy Burnham says that Labour ‘has not been good enough’ and needs to change as he launches his Makerfield by-election pitch

‘We have not been good enough. A vote for me in this by election is a vote to change Labour It is a vote to give the people in these communities back the party they used to know

‘A party that is solidly on the side of working class people and working class communities’

Burnham said that “A vote for me in this byelection campaign is a vote to change labour”

Burnham launched his campaign at Stubshaw Cross Community Centre in Ashton in Makerfield

Surrounded by his supporters he told the assembled media that British politics is tired and “it needs a new script”.

“No one has done enough — we have had 40 years of policies that have left people struggling to afford the everyday basics of their lives”.

He said he wanted to see “the biggest programme of council house building since the Second World War” and that he would use rail nationalisation to bring down rail fares
