Lyceum Theatre Oldham is opening its doors on 30 November, 660 days after it closed its doors, following huge amounts cleaning and ventilation work and changes in work practices to keep audiences, performers and volunteers safe.

Lyceum Theatre Oldham is opening later than many theatres. They have been working with professionals to improve ventilation and put other measures in place to help audiences stay safe while going out.

The Season will be full of joy! The Artistic Directors have chosen four plays full of smiles, chuckles and belly laughs to help everyone engage with the shared experience we’ve all missed.

The first play will have only five performances to ease everyone in gently. As the season progresses there will gradually be more performances of each play. The hope is that, by the June next year, audiences will feel confident enough to be out and Houses will be back up to capacity.

The season opens with the play that was cancelled when COVID-19 hit. Hugh Leonard’s A LIFE (30 November – 4 December) slips between the 1970s and 1930s, as protagonist Drumm reflects on a life that’s not been well lived. This type of bittersweet comedy is always handled sensitively by the Lyceum.

The February play is TIME AND TIME AGAIN (14 – 19 February 2022), Alan Ackbourn’s achingly funny story of crossed wires and lust with hilarious results.

In April, they step back in time to Wakes Week in the early 20th Century. Stanley Houghton’s classic, HINDLE WAKES (2 – 9 April) was ground-breaking at the time and still keeps us laughing over a century later.

The season ends with more laughs than you can throw a stick at! HABEAS CORPUS (10 – 18 June) is one of Alan Bennett’s best and funniest tales of mistaken identity, double entendres and lechery, finishing off the season with a wonderful celebration of Britishness!
