Manchester’s Portico Library reopens its doors this morning for the first time since the beginning of lockdown in March.

Its opening hours are slightly reduced. The Portico will be open Monday – Friday, 10:00-16:00, until further notice.

The cafe will also re-open on Tuesday the 1st of September. For the time being cafe visitors are being asked to book in advance via this online form. The cafe will be serving a limited menu of drinks, soups and sandwiches.

Before lockdown the library waspreparing to launch a new exhibition, What it is to be here.

April 2020 marked 250 years since Lieutenant James Cook arrived, uninvited, onto Gweagal shores at Kamay (Botany Bay) in what is now Australia. For the local Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders, this event changed everything.

Now, as well as being available to explore online, this exhibition has been extended and you can view it in situ at The Portico until Mon 9 November 2020.
