The Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has told the BBC this morning that he won’t be forced into a premature decision” on the Manchester leg of HS2

Speculation this morning continues that the announcement will be made during the Conservative Party conference in Manchester

One report says that there will be an emergency cabinet meeting this morning when the decision will be debated

Yesterday the Tory West Midlands Mayor Andy Street in an impromptu press conference suggested that the Manchester leg of the project could be a saved with the help of finance from the private sector

In an interview with Times Radio, Sunak refused to confirm the line would be axed, saying he needed to “take the time to look at it properly and get across the detail”.

He also condemned the amount of money being spent on HS2.

“It’s clear that the cost of this programme have escalated far beyond what anybody thought at the beginning,” he said.
