Blogs on fertility can provide a unique insight into the experience of patients, a Lancaster University researcher has discovered.

And, in a bid to encourage more open discussion on the subject that affects one in six people, Linguistics and English Language PhD student Karen Kinloch has organised an open event in Manchester.

The “Fertile Minds, Hidden Voices” project, set up by Karen, is hosting this event, as part of National Fertility Awareness Week 2015, for any patients, nurses, doctors and counsellors interested in improving communication.

“Through my research about the language of infertility, I have found that there is a big difference in how infertility is viewed by the media and by clinical staff compared with the actual experience of people going through fertility treatment.” says Karen, whose research is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.

Anyone who has an interest in, or experience of, fertility issues is welcome to attend this open event, meet the researcher and give feedback on the project.

After a short presentation on the research, there will be a discussion on how the findings can be used to develop communication around fertility treatment.

The event on November 4 (6.30pm to 8.30pm) at Friends Meeting House in Manchester is free and refreshments will be provided.
