The smash-hit West End sensation, Motown The Musical is roaring into Manchester this February and music fans across the North West are being encouraged to share their own special Motown memories to mark this momentous occasion.

Motown The Musical tells the story of Berry Gordy’s world-famous Motown record label, which gave rise to huge stars such as The Jackson 5, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. The production is heading to the Manchester’s Opera House from Tuesday February 26th – Saturday 23rd March.

The record label celebrated its 60thanniversary on January 12th 2019, and to mark the anniversary, fans are being encouraged to share their memories of Motown legends performing at the Manchester Odeon on March 30th 1965.

A significant time for Motown was in 1965 when Motown launched its foreign label, Tamla-Motown, in the UK and embarked on their first European Motortown Revue that would include performances and television appearances across Europe.

The Tamla-Motown Revue UK tour visited cities across the UK. The Supremes, Martha and The Vandellas, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles and Stevie Wonder – all performed at this concert in Manchester in 1965.

Another artist which was a big part of Motown’s success was The Jackson 5 who visited Manchester on their European tour in 1972 and performed at the King’s Hall at Belle Vue, Gorton.

Motown the Musical includes performances from all of the artists which have performed in Manchester and includes music and lyrics from the Motown catalogue and book by Motown founder Berry Gordy. Charles Randolph-Wright’s production features a live orchestra playing 50 Motown tracks includingAin’t No Mountain High Enough, I’ll Be There, Dancing In The Street, Stop! In The Name Of Love, My Girland I Heard It through the Grapevine and tells the story behind the classic hits.

Motown The Musical and the Opera House are appealing for anyone who attended the ground-breaking gigs in 1965 and in 1972 to share their unique experiences. If you were a part of that incredible performance, saw Motown artists perform in Manchester in the following years or have pictures and anecdotes from family members who were there, then we want to hear from you!
