Avison Young has secured planning approval for 250 new homes on the site of the former Cowlishaw abattoir on private land off Cocker Mill Lane, Oldham.
As approved by Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council’s planning committee, the existing abattoir buildings will be demolished to make way for the new residential development with associated landscaping, open space, drainage and infrastructure.
The housing development will include six-acres of public realm and provide easy pedestrian, cycling and vehicular access to Shaw town centre which has numerous shops and community amenities.
The site, which is currently designated as ‘other protected open land’ (OPOL), also forms part of a wider draft allocation for new housing within the borough as part of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework.
Jamie Lynch, senior environmental planner within Avison Young’s Manchester team, said: “We are delighted to secure outline approval on this highly sustainable site and look forward to progressing a detailed application at the earliest opportunity.”
The wider project team that secured the planning consent at Cowlishaw abattoir include Grasscroft Property who provided development management services, Eddison as highways advisor and Urban Green as design and landscape specialists. Bowland acted as ecology advisor with Shoosmiths the legal representative.
A developer has not yet been selected to deliver the housing scheme.
