Being prepared for your next road trip includes having the proper insurance. If traveling from the United States to Europe, or the UK, you will need supplemental insurance. If you are traveling to Europe from the UK, you may only need to get an insurance green card. This is a certificate from your current insurance agent that guarantees that you have third-party insurance. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) says that any domestic United Kingdom car insurance used for travel into the European Economic Area is valid for driving if you have a green card.

Car insurance is a legal requirement no matter where you drive. There are three kinds to choose from. One is the minimum required. One has the maximum coverage that you can have. The third is in the middle of the two.

  1. Third Party-This is the lowest insurance that you can get. It is the legal minimum amount of coverage that a motorist can have. This is not always the cheapest route, though. Depending on your driving record, your location, and your car. Third-party insurance only covers the other people, and objects, involved in an accident. It does not cover damage to your vehicle or any injuries that you may sustain.
  2. Third-Party Fire and Theft-This is the second level of insurance available. It covers the other parties, and property, that is injured or damaged in an accident. It does not cover you or your vehicle in the case of an accident. However, it does cover your vehicle in the case of theft or a vehicle fire.
  3. Full Comprehensive Car InsuranceThis is the top-of-line auto coverage. Depending on the area and history of the driver, this insurance may be cheaper than the other options. It covers other people and property, in an accident, as well as you and your vehicle. It also has fire and theft coverage in case one of these two circumstances should happen.

The choices available can be a little confusing if you do not know the differences of the coverage levels. The best to get is Full Comprehensive because when an accident does occur, there will more than likely be damage to your car, as well as the other person’s property. Hopefully not, but it is also possible to sustain an injury on either side of the accident. Being covered gives you the ease of mind when going out on a road trip.

There is always a chance of theft when traveling. Making sure that you have coverage in this instance is important when away from home. Being stranded because of a missing, or damaged car can be nerve-wracking enough without having to worry about how to fix or replace it.

If you choose to go with the minimum required amount than you take your risks. It is good that others will be covered, which is why it is a law that this type of insurance is used with all policies. If an accident does happen you will be liable for all your repairs, and you will have to cover any injuries that you, or anyone else in your car, sustains.
