Bloom and Grow, Oldham’s entry into North West in Bloom, has won the Best City Award for the tenth year in a row.

Oldham also brought home the Best Town/City Centre and Best Public Feature Awards.

Councillor Sean Fielding, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “To win Best City every year for the last decade is an outstanding achievement.

“This is a real honour for the borough and maintaining such a high standard of work is superb.

“Our Bloom and Grow campaign is a real team effort and it wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of our dedicated Environment Team, volunteers, residents, schools, communities and businesses.

“The displays we produced obviously impressed the judges, made a lot of people smile and made the borough look good.

“We’d like to thank everyone for doing their bit, coming together and helping us bring these awards back to Oldham.

“This lasting community work and environmental improvements, plus the continued success of Bloom and Grow are the reasons why we’ve committed to continue funding the campaign next year.

“We’ll continue to deliver a lasting horticultural and green legacy, through projects and campaigns such as this, Northern Routes and Green Oldham.”

The trophy will sit alongside the Best City Gold Award given last week at the Britain in Bloom ceremony.

The theme for this year’s campaign was ‘Greening Grey Britain’ – which encouraged residents, schools and businesses to grow plants and flowers where ever possible.

Oldham put its own slant on things and also marked the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

The town centre WOW Bed was once again our centrepiece and the out of this world design incorporated astronauts and rockets – as well as the usual eye-catching flower display.

The RHS judges visited the borough this summer and were obviously impressed with what they saw.

The judging route, which covers a different part of Oldham every year, started in Chadderton Hall Park, took in large parts of the district, before heading up to the town centre.
