Today, Google announces the results of its 2019 Year in Search, revealing the people, topics, events, and places that captured the world’s attention through the lens of Google Search.

Year in Search 2019 has revealed Manchester’s love for fantasy fiction with the controversial final series of Game of Thrones top the list as eight years of the drama series came to a close this year. Marvel’s superhero extravaganza Avengers Endgame, alongside character Thanos and Captain Marvel and made it to the top ten too.

Also in the list of most Googled things by Mancunians Michael Jackson was the ninth highest and Chernobyl in sixth. A wide and varied selection of searches indeed!

Sport also triumphed as England’s impressive summer of sport began with an enthralling Cricket World Cup win, which placed second in the overall list. The tournament captured the world’s attention as the six-week competition came down to a nail-biting ‘Super Over’ versus New Zealand in the final.

This year saw the Rugby World Cup come fifth on Manchester’s top trending list. Taking place in Asia for the first time, the tournament was crammed full of incident as England reached the final in impressive style and Typhoon Hagibis caused unwanted chaos across Japan.

On a countrywide scale the most searched for musician was R Kelly, news event was Notre Dame and what is question was ‘What is Area 51?’.

Kirstin Wright, a Google Trends expert said, “The 2019 Year in Search lists not only reveal the most popular trends from the past 12 months, but also give insight into the biggest events in the news, politics, sports, entertainment and even the latest lingo. As people continue to look for information in new and different ways, Google Search keeps evolving to make the world’s information accessible and useful to all.”
