Following a long winter and three national lockdowns, the UK has never been keener to head to the beach and let their hair down.

Luckily for the people of Manchester, Great Northern Warehouse is preparing for the reopening of its much loved family sandpit; but first it’s getting a little makeover.

Spring cleaning on the sandpit commenced yesterday (29th March), ensuring its refreshed with 10 tonnes of new sand, while its existing 50 tonnes of sand is also sifted and cleaned, ready for its official reopening on Easter weekend.

The spectacular sandpit is a firm family favourite with Manchester residents and returns to the warehouse’s iconic amphitheatre to provide a great space for outdoor socialising, which is allowed between two households or a group of six.

As the epicenter of the city’s world-famous industrial heritage, the sandpit once again revives the city’s historic tradition of creating free and safe outdoor play areas for children – something which has been sorely missed over the past year.

Whether it’s crafted into castles, dug into ditches, sifted or buried, sand offers countless opportunities for both fun and learning not to mention the feeling of it between your toes! Even grown-ups will want to join in.

But the Great Northern Warehouse isn’t just stopping there with its spring cleaning, as the fantastic artwork on the playhouse is also getting revived with a fresh lick of paint and a varnish job from local artist MOZE, while the site’s community gardener, Stuart, has been busy cutting the surrounding grass and planting new beds – ensuring the whole space is ready for an Instagram-worthy moment with family or friends.

Mark Schofield, Centre Director for Great Northern said, “The past year has been tough for everyone and we’re excited to welcome locals back to Great Northern Warehouse once again. Following the success of the sandpit in the past, we’re happy to announce the return this Easter for families to safely enjoy – restoring a sense of normality to our amazing city.”
