Christmas is a time to spend time with your loved ones and enjoy festive culinary treats with a couple of boozy drinks.

The historic Midland Hotel does not only hit the brief perfectly with their festive afternoon tea menu, but it also goes far beyond.

From the start of the service, the atmosphere was relaxed, giving us the sense we were completely shut out from the hustle and bustle of the busy city centre with people buzzing around getting their Christmas shopping or visiting the markets.

Sat down in a beautiful room with impeccable service from the staff, the tone was set with a glass of mulled wine indicating to us that we were commencing our delightful journey into Christmas on this December afternoon.

As the main event began, accompanied by a glass of champagne, the sandwiches came to the forefront. A standout was the ultra festive golden roast turkey breast with sage and onion stuffing on brown bread. The roast Yorkshire beef with horseradish and watercress on white bread was also a major success.

Then we moved onto the cakes, delicious every single one of them. The star of the show was the mince pie. topped with festive icing the flavour just sang out Christmas with every bite.

The next festive treat came in the way of icing dusted stollen with marzipan and also of note was the black forest gateaux, griottine cherries and dark chocolate soil.

As if this was not enough scones with clotted cream a selection of strawberry or raspberry jams and lemon curd followed. All washed down with a cup of one of the hotels private blend loose leaf teas. Superb.
