Your first escape room adventure is coming soon, and you may be wondering whether preparation makes sense. There are a few things you can do to improve your odds of success. If you have zero experience solving escape room riddles, all the more reason for a little homework.

Escape rooms are growing in popularity, enchanting people on all continents. Detective, mystical or horror plots – pick the narrative that excites you! When in the United Kingdom, be sure to check out escape room London – it is so refreshingly different from the trivial sightseeing. Before you embark on your adventure, follow our simple preparatory guidelines.

1.Relax

For newbies, this puzzle-solving experience may seem daunting. Being trapped in a room for 60 minutes, especially with some horror plot unfolding, sounds scary. But if you expect the experience to feel like the set of a Saw movie, you are mistaken.

Escape rooms are perfectly safe, even though the setting may seem dangerous. You may have your adrenaline heightened, but whatever happens, it will cause no harm – neither emotional nor physical. Besides, there is a range of storylines to choose from. You may be getting out of captivity, looking for a stolen work of art, or taking down a dirty politician.

2. Learn the rules

Be sure to familiarize yourself with all the rules of the exact escape room you are going to. There will be a certain number of clues to use, a time limit (usually an hour), a list of items you must not touch, etc. This will prevent you from committing typical newbie mistakes, which can save you a lot of time.

3. Practice

How can you practice without actually entering an escape room? Download an app! Today, there is an app for seemingly everything, and escape rooms are no exception. There are escape games available for iOS and Android, and these can give you a sense of what is to come. The puzzles you are given in a real room will differ, but it will get you in the right frame of mind. Besides, you will have a chance to practice opening different types of locks and deciphering coded messages.

4. Analyse your team

It is always best to play with friends or family – people you know well. Successful escape is based on efficient teamwork. You need to collaborate and take advantage of each other’s strengths. One groupmate may be skilled at opening locks, another one finds the right items quickly, and you may be a talented strategist.

The properly managed combination of your talents will lead to victory. It is not necessary to arrange a meetup solely for the purpose of strategising. However,  knowing how to assign roles is handy.

Practice a bit before entering your very first escape room. Make sure the goal, the plot, and rules are understood by everyone. Know what roles could be assigned to which teammates, and play some games to get into the right mindset.
