Road works on one of Salford’s busiest roads will be extended for several weeks after workers discovered a collapsed sewer.
Staff from Electricity NW were laying a high voltage cable at the junction of Green Lane and the A57 Liverpool Road in Eccles when the problem was discovered.
An old 750mm wide sewer beneath the road has collapsed leaving an eight metre deep void. Work has now started to fill the void and make it safe but could take up to seven weeks to complete. Traffic is being managed with three-way temporary traffic lights and motorists are advised to find alternative routes or build in extra time for their journey.
Councillor Mike McCusker, lead member for planning and sustainable development, said: “This has to be made safe otherwise the road itself could collapse. Work has started and will be completed as quickly as possible.”
