FINAL finishing touches are being made to the spectacular lanterns ready for Tameside Winter Carnival this Saturday (18 November).

And a fabulous line up of bands, dance troops, schools and community groups from across the borough are confirmed to be taking part in the parade.

The carnival – which will light up the streets with amazing lanterns, vibrant costumes, music and dancing – will start at Katherine Street at 6pm and follow a route through Ashton Town Centre, ending with a festive finale with Father Christmas and pyrotechnics in Old Cross Street Car Park from 7pm. Stamford Street is the perfect spot to watch the parade go by.

The theme is Pageants of the Past and Present – celebrating traditional Tameside marches and parades such as Whit Friday and Cotton Queens while also looking at contemporary international carnivals.

Tameside Council has successfully applied for £15k Arts Council funding to stage the event and is working with Tameside based arts organisation Global Grooves, which grows local artistic talent. Individuals, families and community groups have been taking part in free lantern making workshops over the past few weeks ready for big night.

Here’s a run down of some of the bands and groups taking part:

Denton Brass Band, Gibson Dance Academy, Corrie Primary, Millbrook Primary, Manchester Road Primary Academy, 7th Stalybridge Scouts, 3rd Ashton Scouts, 2nd Ashton Scouts,  Age UK Tameside,  Tameside Young Carers Project,  St John’s Brass Band, STAR (Smallshaw Tenants and Residents association), New Charter Housing Association, 5th Dukinfield Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, 7th Dukinfield Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, Tameside Armed Services Community, The Anthony Seddon Fund, The Believe and Achieve Trust, 12th Ashton Beavers, Scouts and Cubs, 339th Manchester Scouts, Cromwell High School.
Old Cross Street car park will be closed on the day of parade but there will be plenty of alternative parking  in the town.

Tameside Council Deputy Executive Leader Cllr John Taylor said: “Tameside Winter Carnival promises to be a wonderful event – bringing together groups and communities from across the borough in a fantastic celebration of Tameside’s cultural past as well as contemporary arts and pageants.

“It will launch five weekends of festive family fun in Ashton – Tameside Christmas Market will start on 24-26 November and run for three weekends and Ashton Christmas Farmers’ Market, which will offer free land train rides, will be held on 17 December. There will be something for everyone to enjoy.
