The Chancellor Philip Hammond will use his speech at the Tory Party Conference in Manchester today to  announce that £400m is to be spent for new Northern Powerhouse projects.

£300m will be used to link the High Speed Rail line to cities not on route while £100m will be spent on road schemes.

The new money will be used to ensure HS2 will link to faster trains between Liverpool and Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds and York and comes after the disappointing announced earlier this summer that the electrification of the TransPennine line would not be going ahead.

The Chancellor Philip Hammond says that “This investment will go towards ensuring HS2 infrastructure can link up with future Northern Powerhouse and Midlands rail projects – helping the towns and cities of the North reach their full potential.”

The road schemes have not yet been revealed but says the government thirteen will be in the North West while ten will be in Yorkshire and another ten in the North East,
