Manchester is renowned for its nightlife, having produced some of the most famous clubs in the country, such as the legendary Hacienda. Even though this legendary spot closed its doors in 1997, the city is still thriving after dark, with a vast choice of bars, clubs, and high-quality casinos. Manchester’s three leading casinos all welcome new players and will take good care of you if it’s your first time, but you need to know some things before you go.

Dress to impress

Although you don’t need to go the full James Bond to visit a casino, you do need to consider what you wear. You can play casino games online, at sites such as 888 Casino, in your pyjamas, but you should make an effort with your appearance when visiting a live venue.

Both of the major Manchester casinos have a ‘smart casual’ dress code, which means jeans and smart trainers are allowed, but you should steer clear of scruffy clothes, workwear, and sportswear such as tracksuit bottoms.

The other thing you need to do before you go in is to turn your phone off. Not only are ringing phones distracting, using a phone while you’re playing could be seen as cheating and lead to you being ejected from the game, or even from the casino. Turn it off or better still, leave it at home. The casino will happily call you a taxi at the end of the night, and it will probably come quicker than if you request one yourself.

Do your homework

You don’t have to be an expert player to enjoy a night at the casino, but you should know the basics of the game you want to play. If you’re not sure, stand and watch for a while until you get the hang of it. Don’t sit until you’re ready to play, as you will be stopping someone else from joining the game.

It’s best not to ask the dealer or your fellow players for advice because they don’t want to be the one responsible if you lose. Similarly, you shouldn’t get cocky and offer advice to others, as this is unlikely to go down well. Play your own game and learn as you go along.

Chips and bets

Casinos use chips for bets, not cash, and you can buy these either at the main cashier or at your chosen game table. Chips are purchased at the table by placing your money down, and casino etiquette says that you should never hand it directly to the dealer. Some games, such as roulette, use different coloured chips for different players, so make sure you change these chips back to generic ones before you move on to another game.

Each table will clearly display the minimum and maximum bets, and these are set, so do not try to negotiate with your last few chips or try to go all-in when you’re on a roll. Once you have laid your bets, do not touch your chips again. Ask the croupier or dealer if you can change your bet, and they will pass them back to you if that’s possible.

Table manners

Like anywhere else, casinos work best when everyone is considerate of each other and behaves well. No one likes a sore loser, and a lousy winner can be even worse, so try to keep your emotions under control to avoid spoiling the fun for other players. It’s best to walk away and celebrate or commiserate with your friends at the bar (remembering to tip the dealer or croupier, whether you win or lose).

Speaking of bars, you should keep your drinking in moderation to avoid making a fool of yourself. Many casinos will offer free drinks or drinks promotions to attract players, but you need to go easy on these if you want to stay in control and not be thrown out of the casino. Again, remember to tip your waiters, even if the drinks they bring you are on the house.

A great night at the casino can be great fun and really exciting, whether you win or lose. Just make sure that your fun doesn’t spoil it for anyone else. Follow the simple steps above, and you’ll not only know how to behave, but you’ll also feel more comfortable and confident too.
