Manchester City are in trouble with UEFA after a section of the crowd starting booing the Champions League anthem before kick off.

Uefa are to open disciplinary proceedings after Geir Thorstelnsson, a Uefa match delegate, reported the home fans after the anthem was jeered prior to City’s 2-1 victory over Seville at the Etihad Stadium last night. The matter is due to be dealt with by November 19.

The anthem is a modern arrangement of Handel’s Zadok the Priest, used in the coronation of English monarchs since the end of the eighteenth century has been played before every champions league game since its inception in 1992 but City fans appear to have a major dislike of the tune as this is not the first time that the anthem has been booed at the Etihad.

The main reason is that the fans, probably quite rightly hold UEFA in contempt for its failure to deal with the resistant racism that the club has endured and over a game played in Moscow behind closed doors depsite the fact that many fans had already arrange their travel and accommodation.

A grievance exemplified by the fact that many homes fans were then let into the stadium on sponsors tickets.

So here at About Manchester we say, bring it on UEFA.
