Birmingham Royal Ballet, one of the world’s leading classical ballet companies, return to their home in the North West with Sir Peter Wright’s acclaimed classic Coppélia

The company’s return to Salford is one of the many ways in which Birmingham Royal Ballet are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. During their run at The Lowry the company will give children the chance to experience a brand new adaptation of Coppélia, made especially for them, with a performance of First Steps: a Child’s Coppélia.

With a flurry of fantastical costumes, beautiful traditional sets and more than a touch of magic, Coppélia is the perfect ballet for all the family. Birmingham Royal Ballet will present one performance of First Steps: a Child’s Coppélia on Friday 6 March at 1pm. A storyteller will set the scene and introduce the music and characters, followed by a performance featuring the full company of dancers and orchestra. This new hour-long adaptation of the classic ballet tale is the perfect introduction to ballet for children aged 3-7 years old.

Lancashire-born dancer Yvette Knight will dance the role of ‘Dawn’, amongst others. Yvette trained at the Royal Ballet School and danced with The Royal Ballet in Coppélia during her student days. Yvette, who once won Young British Dancer of the Year, joined Birmingham Royal Ballet in 2007 and was promoted to First Artist in 2012.

Coppélia tells the magical story of Dr Coppélius, a toymaker who creates the life-like Coppélia doll and wishes for nothing more than to bring her to life. He imagines that his dream has finally come true, but he has merely been caught between Franz, the red-blooded young lover, and Franz’s jealous fiancée Swanilda. However, love triumphs over all in this comedy of mistaken identity for all the family to enjoy.
