A 56-year-old man has died and 29-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after being hit by a van in Hurst Cross Ashton under Lyne last night.

The collision occurred at the junction with Kings Road just before midnight

The white Mercedes Sprinter van had been travelling along Lees Road before continuing onto Hurst Cross.

The van continued onto Hurst Cross where it was involved in a collision with a pedestrian, who had been crossing the road.

The van failed to stop at the scene and was later found abandoned on Park Road, Stalybridge.

The man remains in custody for questioning.

Enquiries are ongoing.

Sergeant Matt Waggett of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Tragically, a man has lost his life as a result of this collision and our thoughts are very much with his family and loved ones as they begin to process this horrendous news. They are currently receiving support from specialist officers.

“We currently have one man in custody in connection with this collision but we’re appealing to anyone with information to come forward and speak with us to assist our investigation. The van involved in the collision failed to remain at the scene so we’re particularly keen to speak with anyone who witnessed a white Mercedes Sprinter in the area at the time.”
