Manchester Cathedral has a new visitor. This very cheeky and rather bossy Troll will be taking up residence under  Manchester Cathedral’s historic 15th century Hanging Bridge from Tuesday until Saturday next week.

The Troll is a brand new addition to the Cathedral’s colourful list of characters and is the inspiration behind local author Alice Sargent’s new book, The Troll of Manchester Cathedral. The author will be in residence at the themed events taking place next week reading from her first children’s book amid a torrent of troll themed activities and trails around the medieval core of the Cathedral with the badly behaved troll doing his best to disrupt proceedings.

Alice brings Manchester’s medieval history to life with a playful story which is both fun and educational. Alice hopes that families will be inspired to visit the landmarks featured in the book – Manchester Cathedral and the little known Hanging Bridge which dates back to 1421.

During the sessions children get an opportunity to listen to the author read from her book, explore this magnificent building and discover where the Troll hides out. Families can opt for a morning or afternoon session or to book both and stay for the whole day! The Cathedral’s youngest guide, Blaise aged 12, will also be leading a Troll Mask Making Trail and Medieval Safari across the Cathedral leaving no stone unturned in his quest to track down the Troll as well as the wild and exotic beasts carved into the fabric of this historic church.

For Alice, a school teacher, this is the culmination of a long-held desire to share Manchester’s lesser known history with a new generation. Manchester has a fascinating medieval history and it’s a great injustice that most people, even Mancunians, aren’t given the opportunity to learn more about it. As a local myself, it’s important to me because it’s my heritage, and I’m sure other people feel the same way.”  Author Alice Sargent.

The Very Revd Rogers Govender, Dean of Manchester said: “We have been delighted by the response from families to the three beautiful BookBenches in place throughout the school holidays and we welcome the opportunity to be a part of the BookBench Trail, in partnership with Manchester City Council, The Literacy Trust and Wild in Art to play our part in supporting the wider ambitions of the Read Manchester initiative. This brilliant new book casts an original and inspirational spotlight on our 15th century Hanging Bridge, tucked away in the basement of the Cathedral Visitor Centre. Through our Education team we offer a wide range of opportunities to schools and colleges but it is always lovely to welcome local families through our Terrific Tuesday programmes during school holidays as well”
