A recent survey has found that Christmas, Harry Potter and hearts are the most googled SVGs in the UK. The research, which was conducted by SVG experts Design Bundles, found that these three designs have been googled an average of 1,600 times each month from September to November 2021.

SVGs, which stands for scalable vector graphics, is an Extensible Markup Language (XML) based image format. The vector graphic can be used for a variety of things, such as advertisements, decorations and scrapbooking. Users can also buy or make an SVG animation, which can be used online.

Many people turn to search engines to find an SVG image that can be used for their specific design purpose. Popular designs often feature a favourite character, romantic imagery or mythical creatures as they are instantly recognisable by people of all ages.

It’s little wonder that Christmas SVG images were one of the most popular designs over the Autumn and Winter months. There was clearly an increase of users that wanted to use seasonal imagery in their preparation for the festive season.

Christmas SVG images are often used on party invites during November and December, as well as to decorate homes and belongings. Although Christmas SVGs have proven the most popular in this survey, their number of online searches is likely to decrease once December ends and the New Year begins.

The fictional character, Harry Potter, also appeared as one of the most popular SVGs to be searched for on Google. This is largely thanks to the huge fanbase that the boy-wizard has accumulated from the various books, movies and merchandise that makes up the magical franchise. As Harry Potter isn’t seasonal, this design has the potential to keep its online popularity throughout the year.

There are a number of iconic images that are associated with Harry Potter, such as the round glasses and lightning bolt scar, and the Deathly Hallows, which is an important feature within the plot. Fans often like to decorate their belongings with Harry Potter images to show how much they love the franchise.

Heart SVGs have proven popular on both sides of the Atlantic. They topped the list as the most googled SVG in the United States in a previous survey that was conducted over a similar time period. Their popularity is mostly due to the simplicity of the design and its association with love. Ironically, ‘love’ SVGs were only searched for an average of 880 times each month, which puts the design at half the number of Google searches than hearts.

Top ten most googled SVGs in the UK

Flowers, unicorns and butterflies are all featured in the top ten list of the most googled SVGs. The whimsical designs are usually found in bright colours, although they are also popular in black and white. Many people use cutting machines that are able to support SVG formats so that they can print out the designs. The printed design can then be used as decorations for a party or for other types of papercrafts.

Flower SVGs were the only design to be googled an average of 1,300 times in the three months featured in the survey. Unicorn SVGs were googled an average of 1,000 times each between September to November 2021. Butterfly SVGs had a slightly lower search average of 880 times over the same months. All three designs may be used in conjunction with one another due to the overall mystical and delicate themes.

The survey also found that Disney and Fornite were amongst the most popular SVG designs. Whilst Disney has been a leading entertainment company for many years, Fortnite is a relatively new creation. The online video game was founded in 2017 but was an instant success, especially with pre-teenagers. Both Disney and Fornite feature many iconic characters, although individuals are likely to have their personal favourites.

Disney and Fornite were each googled 1,000 times on average in September, October and November 2021. The designs are usually associated with young children, although both franchises have proven popular with teenagers and adults too.

As with butterflies and love SVGs, dinosaur designs were also amongst the top ten most popular SVGs. Each design had an average of 880 online searches over the course of the three months in 2021. SVG images portray both realistic creatures, as well as cartoon versions with friendly faces. Silhouettes are a common SVG style as they can be easily cut out or incorporated into other designs.

The table below shows the top ten SVG designs that proved most popular from September to November 2021. Each design had the same average number of online searches for each of the three months.

Design Average number of online searches (Sept-Nov 2021)

Heart SVG 1,600

Why is the SVG format popular?

SVG files are a type of vector graphics that can be rescaled to increase or decrease size. These vector images have an unlimited size reduction or enlargement because they aren’t restrained by pixels, as raster images are. The images stay clear and of high quality, whether they are on a tiny smartphone screen or projected onto a large screen, which helps make them popular among designers and crafters.

Due to the formatting of SVG files, they can be sent and downloaded more quickly than most other files due to their small size, which is why many people like using this format. The text within SVG graphics is also identified as written text, which means that the words within the image can be located by Google or other search engines. This also allows the text to be translated into other languages, which makes these files versatile and accessible around the world.

An SVG document containing SVG content can be downloaded onto your computer. You can then print the vector image off using a cutting machine that has the capability to support SVG. These images can then be used in papercraft or as decorations. The unlimited potential of SVG files attracts many people as you could use the SVG file to design anything from a mug to a t-shirt.
