A teenager has died after a van he was driving smashed into a wall in the City Centre while being chased by police.

The silver Vauxhall van left the road while travelling along Corporation Street and collided with a wall.

The driver, a man aged 19, suffered fatal injuries and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the vehicle was detained a short time later by police.

He was taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

Police had commenced pursuit of the vehicle a short time before the collision after it failed to stop for officers.

Detective Chief Inspector John Harris of GMP’s City of Manchester Division said: “This is a tragic incident in which a young man has very sadly lost his life.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this time and they’re receiving support from specialist officers.

“A full investigation has been launched into this collision and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or has any information or dashcam footage, to contact police immediately.”
