Rishi Sunak has become the 57th Prime Minister of the country after being invited this morning to form a Government by King Charles

Speaking outside Downing Street after returning from Buckingham Palace Sunak said that “Some mistakes were made, not born of ill will or bad intentions, but mistakes nonetheless.”

He warned the nation is in a “profound economic crisis” and there were difficult decisions to come”

He pledged that his Government will have “integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level” and he is “not daunted” by the task ahead as he stands “ready to lead our country into the future”

Concluding his speech Sunak said his Government will “fill tomorrow and every day thereafter with hope”

Boris Johnson has offered his “congratulations” to new prime minister Rishi Sunak, adding that “on this historic day, this is the moment for every Conservative to give our new PM their full and wholehearted support”
