Kier Starmer has given his first reaction following the election of Andy Burnham in Makerfield

The Prime Minister told reporters that he will stand against Andy Burnham in a future Labour leadership contest.

The Prime Minister said he would not “walk away” if the Greater Manchester Mayor moved against him

“If there is a contest, just to be clear with you, then yes, I will run, I will stand and I’ve said repeatedly I’m not going to walk away from that.” So prepare for a contest to choose Labour’s leader and the prime minister, over the summer

At it looks as though we are heading for a political standoff over the weekend 100 Labour MPs have now come out and called for Sir Keir Starmer to set out a timeline for his departure according to reports

While many MPs think it’s inevitable that Keir Starmer will lose power to Andy Burnham the question being asked is how will it happen

The majority of the cabinet are unwilling to force the issue and are not ready to tell him to go and it seems that Andy Burnham does not want to formally challenge and instead wants to let pressure build.

Another report from the i claims that Keir Starmer is ringing members of the Cabinet in a bid to shore up his position

“The Prime Minister is already understood to have spoken to at least two loyal Cabinet ministers, including David Lammy, the Deputy Prime Minister, and Richard Hermer, the Attorney General”
