Sir Kier Starmer has travelled to Germany where he’s hoping to rebuild relations with the EU and move past Brexit

His two-day visit to the European Union’s top powers Germany and France is an attempt to reset relations with the rest of the bloc.

Starmer visited the landmark Brandenburg Gate, before meeting President Frank-Walter Steinmeier early on Wednesday. Later, he was greeted with military honours by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz outside the chancellery under a bright blue sky.

Speaking in Berlin, Sir Keir Starmer jokes ‘he’s been through a lot’ as he thanks the German chancellor ‘for hosting yet another episode in English footballing trauma’

He vowed to “reset” the UK’s relations with the EU, but on Wednesday in Berlin he ruled out rejoining the bloc.

“That does not mean reversing Brexit or re-entering the single market or the customs union, but it does mean a closer relationship on a number of fronts,” the prime minister said at a press conference after talks with Scholz.

Starmer is hoping to draft a new security and defense treaty with the German Government
