Salford Community Leisure has announced its first ever Salford SMile outdoor swimming event to raise money for the RNLI.

Taking place on August 5th, The Salford SMile consists of a one-mile swim in Salford Quays for adults and a 50 metre ‘junior dash’ for children aged 14 and under.

The event, that starts from the Helly Hansen Watersprts Cenre, runs in scheduled ‘waves’ between 0845 (for registration) and 1530 with swimmers being able to select the wave that best suits their ability such as a 30 minute wave, a 40-50 minute wave and 50+ minute waves.

Mark Chew, director of Leisure at Salford Community Leisure, says: “We offer a range of water based activities at the Helly Hansen Watersports Centre and with the growing popularity of open water swimming, it was only right that we created this event. It will be a great event for swimmers of all abilities and we’re delighted to be supported by the RNLI.”

Participants will be fully supported with safety crews and safety boats and will start in the Mariners Canal and then swim onto Ontario Basin to complete three 500m laps.

All SMilers will receive a unique swimcap, an RNLI medal and goody bag.

Junior Dashers must be competent at swimming 50 metres (usually 2 lengths of an average pool) unaided. Dashers will receive a finishers certificate.

There will also be food and drink, a bouncy castle for the little ones and much more.

Places must be pre-booked. Sessions cost from £3-£25. To book sessions click here.
