While it might have been seen to have been the subject of a surfboard or a jellyfish sting, Manchester United and England defender Chris Smalling, escaping the flack in Bali, has succumbed to good old fashioned food poisoning.

Rumours abounded when a picture appeared of the defender on social media of the smiling player signing a Manchester United shirt from a hospital bed while appearing to have bandages around his head, a brace around his neck and further bandages around his wrist.

Hardly the best news for Jose Mourinho as he turned up at Cartington for the first day of his first season at the club.

Smalling and girlfriend Sam Cooke escaped to the Indonesian island after England crashed out of the Euros last week and while his club maintain that a dodgy satay was the cause, we are left wondering why it appeared that the dish must have fallen from a great height.

However ‘the truth’ now abounds

“Manchester United can clarify Chris Smalling has had food poisoning during his holiday which resulted in him fainting on Sunday,” said the club in an official statement.
