Air Quality in Manchester continues to improve according to a report out this week
The report from Greater Manchester’s Air Quality Administration Committee found that 2025 monitoring data shows a continued reduction in nitrogen dioxide exceedances compared to 2024, with a significant improvement from 2019 levels
The number of times air quality has exceeded legal limits of nitrogen dioxide has dropped from 129 in 2019 to 11 in 2025.
The report though noted that a small number of locations still require targeted intervention to support compliance in 2026
Eleven sites out of 273 were exceeding quality nine of those locations were in Manchester including A665 Cheetham Hill Road , A57(M) Mancunian Way, Shudehill the A6 at Ardwick Green and the A665 Great Ancoats Street
Two sites in Stockport were also causes for concern,The A626 St Mary’s Way and the A34 Kingsway
The report also said the end of March 2026, expenditure on Greater Manchester’s Clean Air Project stood at £110.7m against total
central government funding of £188.4m, with the remaining funding primarily linked
to delivery of the investment-led measures during 2026
