Discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl have both reported record Xmas sales this morning

Aldi reported an 8% rise in sales in the four weeks to Dec. 24 to top £1.5 billion for the first time, while its rival Lidl GB posted an even better 12% increase in the same period.

Both chains said they recorded their busiest ever day of trading on Friday, Dec. 22, with more than 2.5 million customers coming through the doors of Aldi on the day.

Aldi said that its largest ever range of Christmas products saw alternative roasting joints proving particularly popular. Its Specially Selected Wagyu Rib Joint proved a strong seller while and sales of its Specially Selected Crackling Gammon Joint were up by 25 per cent.

CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland, Giles Hurley, pledged to continue lowering the cost of groceries for families.

He said: “We’re really grateful that so many customers chose Aldi for their main Christmas shop this year.

“I’m incredibly proud of our performance this Christmas in what was the busiest trading period in our history. As the fastest-growing supermarket in the country, we welcomed more customers through our doors than ever before and ensured that we delivered the quality and price promise they have come to expect from us.
