Free Railway Children themed rail trail leaflets, inspired by the enduring popularity of the original story and its new film sequel, have been launched.
The trails feature 10 locations from the classic book and have been researched and put together by the South East Manchester Community Rail Partnership and Friends of Strines Station, to promote travel by train.
Many believe that the inspiration for The Railway Children came from Strines, a village in Stockport, between Marple and New Mills.
The Railway Children has never been out of print since it was first published in 1906. It has been made into two major films, four television series, a film sequel and a play.
Walkers can choose from two trails which start at Strines Railway Station on the Hope Valley Line.
Simon Temple, Chair of South East Manchester Community Rail Partnership, said, “It’s fantastic to see a renewed interest in Edith Nesbit’s classic story thanks to the popularity of 2022’s The Railway Children Return which has introduced a new generation to the series and got people reminiscing about the original.
“We hope walkers and families enjoy discovering or rediscovering these beautiful spots that are easily accessible from the rail line.”
The trails offer fantastic views from Mellor and also take in sections of the Peak Forest Canal.
With the different route options to choose from, walkers can return to Strines Station or finish their walk in Marple station which has toilet facilities and a range of shops, cafes and eateries nearby.
From Manchester, the journey to Strines by train also offers scenic views of the Marple Aqueduct, which is one of the ten locations. Passengers looking right from the train window just beyond Romiley Station will get a first glimpse of the Grade I listed structure which carries the Peak Forest Canal over the River Goyt.
The Friends of Strines Station have installed leaflet holders so visitors can collect the free guided walks leaflets upon arrival or the leaflets can be downloaded from the South East Manchester Community Rail Partnership website.
