Major High Street chains are shutting their doors today

McDonald’s Primark and Waterstones are among the outlets who have announced that they will be closing in response to the Covid-19 crisis.

McDonalds had previously closed its seating areas but had continued to offer takeaway and drive-through services but yesterday it announced that all its 1270 outlets will be shut by tonight

Primark will also be closing its doors on all 189 of its UK stores. Earlier yesterday the budget fashion cancelled all supplier orders that have yet to reach its distribution centres,and yesterday afternoon.

A company spokesperson said : ‘With the health and welfare of our employees and customers front of mind, we have made the decision to close our stores in the UK, until further notice.

Book chain Waterstones followed suit after courting controversy claiming with book sales on the rise it was providing an essential service

In a statement on its site at 5pm yesterday , Waterstones said: “To help prevent spread of the Coronavirus, and to protect the wellbeing of our customers and staff, sadly Waterstones will temporarily close its doors by the close of trade Monday 23rd March until further notice.

Bookseller Blackwells with a Manchester branch on Oxford Road followed suit
