Whilst it’s the epitome of romance to nip off to Paris for a weekend for two, it’s all too easy to forget about what lies on our doorstep. Manchester is a beautiful city; it’s centre is even known to some as the Venice of the North because of its picturesque canal ways. With such a varied group of people calling the city home, Manchester has a rich and diverse culture to explore. Whether you choose to eat your way around our many famous restaurants, or you’d like to pick out some of the quirkiest date ideas the city has to offer – here are our top favourites.

Indulge at Ginger’s Comfort Emporium

If you’re making a day of it, then always start with a coffee (and maybe something sweet). Located on the top floor of Affleck’s indoor market, Ginger’s Comfort Emporium has everything you could need for the perfect start to the day. The coffee is freshly ground and wonderfully dark, ideal for a proper caffeine boost. If you fancy something naughty, then those with a sweet tooth will be in heaven just looking at the selection of ice-creams on offer. The malted coconut ice-cream is just like a childhood mouthful of coconut ice, the way your grandma used to make it. The feeling of grandma’s own cooking is only amplified by the wonderfully kitsch 1950s decor. Indulging in a little nostalgia has never been so delicious.

Treat Yourself at Tattu

Manchester has a frankly overwhelming number of brilliant restaurants to choose from, so narrowing it down is often the hardest part. With that said, we’ve done the hard work and decided that Tattu simply has to be up there with the most romantic spots in the city. Although four restaurants of this chain exist across the UK, they bring something different to each venue. The deep pink blossoming tree behind the bar of the Manchester venue is a dreamy focal point, whilst the dark screens paired with the dim candlelight give an air of mystery and seclusion. If you can’t quite decide on what to eat then the tasting menu changes seasonally but is always a real treat.

Embrace the Glamour at Genting Casino

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a James Bond, or indeed a Vesper Lynd, then there’s no place better than a casino to finish off your date night in style. The Genting Casino is slap bang in the middle of town, so you can easily walk from a restaurant. Inside the casino there are all of the games you would expect, including slots, roulette and poker. Staying true to the Casino Royale theme it would be worth familiarising yourself with the rules of Texas Hold’em beforehand. However, if you didn’t find the time for that, then there’s no need to fret as on quiet evenings the staff will be more than happy to assist you as you learn.

Get Lost in John Ryland’s library

Many of Manchester’s population come here to study at the university and end up falling in love with the city. Perhaps you and your lover followed this route and, if you did, then a date idea that’s bound to go down well is a visit to John Ryland’s library. This neo-gothic building is part of Manchester University and its architecture is perhaps its most impressive feature. It truly is a joy to get lost in the maze of bookshelves and passageways. Stealing a kiss amongst the John Ryland collections is sure to take you right back to your student days.
