Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said that the club’s participation in the Club World Cup could potentially ruin their Premier League season

Guardiola said he understood Jurgen Klopp’s criticisms of the Club World Cup but is trying not to think of how the shorter break could potentially “destroy” his team next season.

Klopp, who is now Red Bull’s head of global soccer, was speaking about player care and development this week when he called it a “pointless” tournament and the “worst idea ever implemented in football”.

Speaking to the media yesterday though Guardiola said

I’m so proud to be here. Many teams complain about this competition because they are not here, otherwise they would maybe love to be here.

They would bring their media here, bring their supporters here, their income here – and they would be happy to be here.

I would love to have two months off for next season… But it is what it is. We deserve for what we have done in the past to be here. Once we are, let’s do our best as possible.”
