The UK has recorded its highest daily deaths from Covid since the pandemic began-1,610 people who tested positive for the disease within 28 days have died- 33,355 confirmed coronavirus cases were also recorded in the past 24 hours.

A total of 4,266,577 people have now received the 1st dose of a vaccine

Meanwhile an estimated 1 in 8 people in England had antibodies against the coronavirus during December, suggesting they have had COVID-19 previously.

The Office for National Statistics said an estimated 12.1% of people aged 16 years and over in England had antibodies last month.

The figures showed large variations around the country.16.8% of the population aged 16 or over in Yorkshire and the Humber would have tested positive for antibodies in December, overtaking London at 16.4%. In the North West, the figure is 15.1% but is just 4.9% for people in south-west England.

Matt Hancock, the health secretary, has announced that he is having to self-isolate because he has received an alert from the Covid app saying he has been close to someone who tested positive.
