Oldham Council have announced that they are to start demolishing Manchester Street footbridge.

Work is set to begin on Saturday, January 31 and could take up to three weeks.

Councillor Dave Hibbert, Cabinet Member for Housing, Planning and Highways, said: “Last year the council made the decision to demolish the pedestrian bridge as it was underused and has not been popular with residents, visitors and people who work in the town centre for a number of years.

“We were also forced to close the bridge earlier than we anticipated because of numerous incidents of anti-social behaviour and vandalism attacks on the structure.

“We deemed the bridge was no longer safe for members of the public to use, spending any more money on it would have been a waste of council tax payers’ money.

“The bridge has now been closed for more than six months and people have got used to using the alternative and safe crossing routes, which are far easier to access, available just metres away on Oldham Way and at the Manchester Street roundabout.”

To ensure that disruption to residents and businesses is kept to a minimum the bulk of the works will be carried out over two weekends with road closures taking place from Saturday night through to Monday morning.
