Oldham’s Labour Group have made a remarkable u turn after deadlock on who is running the council continues following the May local elections

Arooj Shah stepped aside as Leader of Oldham Council saying that

The Labour Group has been clear: we would not stand in the way of any serious attempt to form a stable, law abiding and legitimate administration in the interests of Oldham.”

Shah added

“The electorate has ensured that Reform are in a position to form an administration and the Labour Group will not seek to block this.”

However after weeks of deadlock the Labour leader has issued a statement outlining her intention to bid for the council leadership writing

She wrote: “We are now two council meetings in without agreement on who will form an administration.

“As we progress to the next meeting on 1st July, it is important we review any and all options which may break the impasse and offer the stable, secure leadership it needs to deliver for Oldham residents.

“Following the local election the Labour Group stood aside to allow those who have campaigned for change to step forward with a reasonable proposition for leadership.

“It is now clear that the options put forward so far were not able to garner the level of support needed to pass in the council chamber.
