This International Yoga Day, practice your Sun Salutations and celebrate the potential end of lockdown restrictions a little differently, with free outdoor classes for all abilities at The Great Northern.

Held in the centre of the Great Northern’s iconic amphitheatre, world-class yoga teachers from The Life Centre will be running 3 sessions throughout the day for people of all ages and abilities on 21st June 2021 at 7.30am, 12.30pm and 5.15pm to celebrate this international calendar day.

The event is an annual highlight but sadly had to be cancelled in 2020 due to safety regulations at the height of the global pandemic. Its return is an exciting sign of normality – plus a great way to enjoy a much-needed exercise in mindfulness and destressing after the most tumultuous 18th months most Mancunians will have ever known, as well as, of course, a physical workout in a group setting.

Kickstart your day by performing 108 Sun Salutations, under the supervision of accomplished yogis, as the sun rises over the city. Then enjoy classes that are tailored to suit all ages including fun functional flow and classical vinyasa yoga.

Mark Schofield, Centre Director for The Great Northern, said, “We are thrilled to be bringing the Yogathon back again this year after a prolonged break. The Great Northern is an inclusive destination for families across Manchester, so we are looking forward to welcoming everybody to these fun sessions that celebrate International Yoga Day again this year in association with the brilliant team at The Life Centre in aid of local mental health charity, Manchester Mind.”

Classes will run from 7:30am, mats are provided and booking is recommended although there will be plenty of space for people to drop in on the day. Please visit the studio’s Eventbrite page to secure your space.

The events are free, with donations from the day’s event will be passed onto local mental health charity, Manchester Mind.

Joanna Huddart at Manchester Mind added, “We are thrilled to know this inspired annual event will be taking place, as the benefits of physical exercise and mindfulness for positive mental health cannot be under-estimated, and we’re so grateful for the kind support shown by GNW and The Life Centre through these changing times.”

Ruth Allan, Business Manager at The Life Centre, commented, “We have designed these classes to work with everyday life, hopefully providing a breath of fresh air after more than a year confined almost entirely to home workouts. What’s more, the day also demonstrates that yoga can be done by anybody at any time.”

The day’s schedule is as follows:

Time Class
7.30am – 9.30am 108 Sun Salutations with Linzi Page
12.30 – 1.15pm Functional Flow with Clare Bethan
5.15 – 6pm Vinyasa Flow with Jess Birchall
