A Manchester eye-surgeon has been named as one of the most influential eye specialists in the world.
Mr Stephen Charles, a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal surgeon at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, has been named in The Ophthalmologist Magazine’s Top 100 Most Powerful List 2016 following a voting process involving 18,000 readers.

Mr Charles has extensive expertise in the surgical and medical treatments of vitreous and retinal diseases, including one of the most common causes of sight loss in the UK: Age-Related Macular Degeneration. He also specialises in retinal detachment, diabetic eye disease, retinal vein occlusions and modern cataract surgery. He joined the Trust in 1997 and currently leads the hospital’s Medical and Surgical Retina Service.

He is also a prominent educator, organising the internationally recognized Vitreoretinal Fellowship program at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital which ran for 11 years until 2011. He trains vitreo-retinal surgeons from across the globe, including Europe, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand.
